The Security Cabinet voted last night to support Prime Minister’s Netanyahu’s plans for a full takeover of Gaza, against the recommendation of the IDF Chief of Staff. The plan does not include annexing Gaza and it doesn’t use the term “occupation”, to avoid responsibility for the civilian population. The first step of the plan is to evacuate the population of Gaza City to safe areas in the south and then for the IDF to besiege the city to pressure Hamas to surrender. If they refuse, the IDF would then enter the city. The operation could be stopped at any time, if Hamas agrees to negotiate. The IDF is reportedly massing troops at the border with Gaza, indicated the potential for a major offensive.
The Security Cabinet agreed to 5 principles to end the war: disarming Hamas, securing the return of all hostages—both living and deceased, demilitarizing the Gaza Strip, maintaining Israeli security control over the area, and establishing a new civilian administration independent of both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. Netanyahu indicated that he would like the Arab states to govern Gaza. Israel and the U.S. will dramatically increase the GHF humanitarian aid distribution location from 4 to at least 16, too flood Gaza with aid.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Germany would suspend exports of weapons to Israel, that can be used in Gaza. He also said that Israel had the right to defend itself against Hamas and that Hamas could have to role in the governing of Gaza. He expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and urged Israel to ease military operations there. The U.K. condemned Israel’s Gaza takeover plan.
Lebanon’s cabinet approved a US-backed proposal for dismantling Hezbollah’s weapons arsenal by the end of 2025. Several Hezbollah related ministers walked out in protest. Hezbollah declared that it would treat the government’s disarmament decision “as if it did not exist.” Meanwhile, an IDF airstrike near Beqa, Lebanon, eliminated a senior Syrian terrorist in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PLFP) in Syria.
