News Update
IDF anti-terror operations continue in Gaza and the West Bank, exchanges of fire with Hezbollah continue in the north and demonstrations pressuring the government to reach a deal for the release of the hostage continue in Israel.
The Biden administration is reportedly considering the option of reaching a separate agreement with Hamas to release the remaining 7 American hostages, 4 of whom are thought to be still alive. Two American sources familiar with the details said the Biden administration has prepared a list of prisoners held in the U.S. Hamas might be interested in. A U.S. official was not optimistic, saying, “Hamas wants two things that only Israel can deliver: a cease-fire and nearly 1,000 Palestinian prisoners currently in Israeli jails. Every other proposal has gone nowhere because that is what Hamas demands for the hostages.” The White House has so far officially denied the possibility of a unilateral deal with Hamas multiple times.
The U.S. is expected to present a new proposal for the ceasefire negotiations. Overnight, Hamas issued a statement rejecting any new cease-fire proposals and saying, “Pressure must be put on Netanyahu and his government and they must be bound to what was agreed upon. We warn against falling into Netanyahu’s trap and tricks, as he uses negotiations to prolong the aggression against our people.”
Prime Minister Netanyahu has made it clear that he will not agree to withdrawing Israeli troops from the Philadelphi corridor, which he believes to be vital to cutting off Hamas from rearming. The IDF and the majority of Israelis disagree with that assessment. For more, click here.
The IDF released video footage of the entrance to the tunnel in which troops retrieved the bodies of the 6 hostages executed by Hamas earlier this week. The entrance was located in a child’s room, decorated with wall paintings of cartoon characters including Snow White and Mickey Mouse. For more, click here.
The UN Security Council held its first official discussion on the condition of the Israeli hostages in Gaza yesterday. UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo opened the session by calling for the immediate release of hostages and condemned Hamas for the murder of six hostages last week. In her briefing, she praised the IDF and the polio vaccination campaign in Gaza, spoke about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and welcomed the negotiations in Doha for a potential deal.
