The U.S. brokered ceasefire deal between Israel and Hezbollah went into effect today at 4am local time. Prior to the ceasefire, Israel launched extensive airstrikes on approximately 330 Hezbollah targets throughout Lebanon. One particularly significant target was a massive underground missile complex in the Bekaa Valley near the Syrian border, which the IDF spent several hours bombing. The Lebanese Army has begun moving south towards the border as per the agreement.
Hamas has now indicated that it is willing to reach a ceasefire and hostage release deal. One Hamas official said that Hamas “appreciates the right of Lebanon and Hezbollah to reach an agreement that protects the people of Lebanon and we hope that this agreement will pave the way to reaching an agreement that ends the war of genocide against our people in Gaza.” Egyptian President Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi and King Abdullah II of Jordan met in Cairo today to discuss the “need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.” Meanwhile, fighting in Gaza continues.

France has officially announced that PM Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Gallant will be granted immunity from ICC arrest warrants during any visit to France. Netanyahu has until midnight tonight to appeal the ICC decision against him. Experts recommend that Netanyahu appeal, arguing that Israel has a “case” and that the decision is flawed. Ministers and other officials believe Israel should ignore the warrants, since an appeal would implicitly acknowledge the court’s authority. They also feel that the incoming Trump administration will impose sanctions against countries following the ICC decision, which will cause the decision to be nullified or ignored.
