The IDF on Saturday carried out an airstrike in the area of Nuseirat in the central Gaza Strip targeting a Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist planning an imminent attack against troops in the area. The strike was reportedly carried out only after coordination with the United States Central Command – CENTCOM. Secretary of State Rubio addressed the strike saying, “We don’t view that as a violation of the ceasefire.” He added, “They have the right if there’s an imminent threat to Israel, and all the mediators agree with that.”
Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated at a cabinet meeting on Sunday, “We control our own security, and we have made it clear regarding the international forces that Israel will determine which troops are unacceptable to us. That is how we act, and that is how we will continue to act. This approach is, of course, understood and accepted by the United States, as its senior officials have confirmed in recent days.”
An Egyptian team equipped with special tools to locate bodies entered Gaza after Israel provided Egypt with coordinates of sites where it believes remains may be found. Egypt’s state-run Al-Qahera el-Ekhbariya channel cited officials saying that “Egypt will provide logistical support and equipment to help locate the bodies of Israeli hostages, given the scale of destruction in the Strip.” Israel approved the team’s entry but had earlier denied a similar request from Turkey.
Complex searches for hostage bodies are progressing at four separate Gaza locations, involving Hamas operatives, Egyptian officials, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. Israel allowing unarmed Hamas members to participate.
US envoy Morgan Ortagus will head to Lebanon after her visit to Israel this week. She is expected to press the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah. In the meantime, Israel continues to strike Hezbollah targets in Lebanon as needed.
Syria, backed by Turkey and several Arab countries, has launched a diplomatic campaign to gain international recognition of its sovereignty over the Golan Heights and to return the territory to its control. The campaign was launched in a speech by Syria’s UN ambassador to the UN Security Council on Friday.
