News Update

The IDF said yesterday that it had destroyed Hamas’ Rafah Brigade along with 80% of the tunnels along the Philadelphi Corridor along the Egyptian border. Terrorists are now attempting to flee northward from Rafah. Farhan Kadi was rescued from a tunnel deep beneath Rafah. The security cabinet voted yesterday to keep IDF forces in the Philadelphi Corridor as part of any potential ceasefire deal. Defense Minister Gallant was the only minister to vote against it.

The IDF has wrapped up a 3 week long operation in Khan Younis, in which they killed over 250 terrorists, destroyed miles of tunnels and rescued the bodies of 6 hostages.

The IDF continues its anti-terror operation in northern Samaria, particularly in Jenin.

IDF jets struck Hezbollah rocket launchers in southern Lebanon early today.

According to testimony given by opposition leader Yair Lapid yesterday at a conference on October 7th, Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar warned Prime Minister Netanyahu in July of 2023 that was was imminent and said, “Our enemies see weakness. We need to show unity to the region, to prevent the possibility of war.” Lapid said that he received the same briefing and that he tried to warn the nation.

Working teams from the Mossad, Shin Bet, and IDF are in Doha after completing discussions in Cairo. These talks saw progress on several issues, with both sides moving closer to agreements. However, key disagreements remain, particularly regarding the veto over which terrorists will be released, the deployment of forces in Gaza, and control over key areas. Israel is also pushing to increase the number of living hostages released in the first stage and is not willing to settle for fewer than 20 to 25 hostages. Israel News for 8-29-2024

News Update

The IDF is continuing an extensive operation against terrorists in Jenin, Tulkarm and Tubas, in northern Samaria. Troops are being supported by combat helicopters and drones. Foreign Minister Israel Katz said that Iran is working to establish an eastern terrorist front in Judea and Samaria, including financing and arming terrorists and smuggling advanced weapons from Jordan. Overnight, IDF forces eliminated 5 terrorists who were hiding in a mosque in Tulkarm, including Muhammad Jaber, also known as Abu Shujaa, who led a terrorist network of about 30 members in Nur Shams and was involved in multiple attacks. A senior member of Islamic Jihad was also arrested by an undercover IDF unit.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Israel to end the operation. Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon responded, “Since October 7th, Iran has been actively working to smuggle sophisticated explosive devices into Judea and Samaria intended for use in suicide bombings in the heart of Israeli cities. The State of Israel will not sit idly by and wait for scenes of buses and cafes exploding in city centers.”

Since October 7, IDF troops have arrested around 4,850 wanted terrorists across the West Bank, including more than 1,960 affiliated with Hamas. Over 600 terrorists have been killed.

IDF forces killed Islamic Jihad Intelligence Unit Commander Osama Jadallah in southern Gaza. Jadallah took part in the October 7th massacre. Combat operations continue in central and southern Gaza, with the IDF eliminating dozens of terrorists and terror infrastructure.

Master Sergeant (Res.) Yohay Hay Glam, 32, from Netanya, a soldier from the 6310th Reconnaissance Battalion, “Jerusalem” Brigade (16th), was killed Wednesday by sniper fire near the Netzarim Corridor in the central Gaza Strip.

The IDF recovered the body of a soldier who was killed in the October 7th massacre and held captive in Gaza. The soldier’s body was found buried in the ground. A key factor in locating the body was intelligence gathered from the interrogation of a Shin Bet detainee.

Aryeh Zalmanovich, the 86 year old founding member of Kibbutz Nir Oz, was the hostage who was held along with recently rescued hostage Farhan Alkadi. Zalmanovich died at the hands of Hamas after being denied the medical care he needed.

News Update

An IDF drone strike killed 4 Hezbollah terrorists at a checkpoint on the road between Damascus and Beirut. The strike came hours after another airstrike hit a pickup truck carrying weapons in northeast Lebanon near the Syrian border.

The IDF launched a major counterterrorism operation in refugee camps near Jenin, Tulkarm, and the Far’a camp in the Jordan Valley early today. At least 11 terrorists have been reportedly killed, most in Jenin. Hundreds of soldiers, supported by air cover, are participating in the operation. Troops have encircled local hospitals, to prevent terrorists from taking refuge there.

Farhan Alkadi, who was rescued Tuesday from a Hamas tunnel in southern Gaza, revealed that he spent most of his captivity in the dark and subsisted on bread and didn’t eat every day. Being a Muslim fluent in Arabic made no difference to Hamas — he was treated just like any other Israeli captive. He also revealed that another hostage held with him died in captivity. Staff Sgt. Amit Friedman, 19, from Or Yehuda, a soldier in the Nahal Brigade’s 932nd Battalion, was killed in combat in southern Gaza.

Slovakia’s government approved plans today to buy six mobile air defense systems from Israel for 554.3 million euros ($616.88 million)

News Update

Elite IDF special forces rescued Qaid Farhan al-Qadi, 52, from a tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip. Al-Qadi, from a Bedouin community near Rahat and a father of 11, was abducted by Hamas on October 7 while working as a guard at a packing factory in Kibbutz Magen. He was being held alone. He was reported to be in stable condition and was transferred to Soroka hospital in Beersheva. The IDF is not releasing any details about the rescue operation, for security reasons.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said, “As part of the bold and determined operations of the IDF and Shin Bet forces deep in the Gaza Strip, our fighters succeeded in rescuing Farhan Alkadi and returning him to his family in Israel. This operation joins a series of impressive operational activities that bring us closer to achieving all the goals of the war.”

Hezbollah continues to fire rockets and launch drones at northern Israel.

At least five terrorists were killed in an IDF drone strike in the Nur al-Shams camp near the city of Tulkarm, in Samaria. One of the dead is Jibril Jibril, 20, from Qalqilya, a member of the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, who was released from prison in Israel as part of the hostage release deal in November. A weapons warehouse was also destroyed.

News Update

Hezbollah planned to launch 500-600 rockets towards northern Israel and dozens of UAVs towards central areas yesterday. The IDF acted preemptively and 100 air force fighter planes struck Hezbollah launching sites. Thousands of rockets were destroyed. Hezbollah did manage to fire over 200 rockets and some drones, but they were all either intercepted or fell in open areas. Some damage was caused by debris from Iron Dome interceptions.

First Sgt. David Moshe Ben Shitrit, 20, from the settlement of Geva Binyamin, was killed by shrapnel from an intercept missile that landed on the navy vessel he was on. Two other soldiers were wounded in the incident.

Hezbollah claimed victory and announced that it was done with retaliation against Israel for the killing of its military commander in Beirut last month. Now the question is whether Iran will attack. intelligence sources believe that Iran will not launch a large direct attack against Israel, but might focus on trying to assassinate a high level Israeli official.

Hamas has, again, rejected a U.S. backed ceasefire proposal that has been accepted by Israel. Hamas fired a rocket at Rishon Letzion yesterday, that fell in a field outside of the city.

Two terrorists who attempted to ram their car into IDF soldiers at the Ariel junction yesterday were killed by security forces at the scene.

News Update

Following a massive rocket barrage on the city of Katzrin in the Golan yesterday, the IDF carried out extensive airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon overnight.

An Israeli airstrike in the Tulkarm refugee camp today reportedly killed three terrorists during an anti-terror IDF operation there.

The Shin Bet and Israel Police arrested four suspects, including one minor, for their involvement in several violent attacks against Palestinians, including last weeks riot in the village of Jit in which 1 Palestinian was killed and 1 injured. The riot was condemned by government officials, including the Prime Minister, and the IDF and security services.

Muhammad Azzam, 34, a doctor at the Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva, was indicted for swearing allegiance to ISIS. He was arrested a month ago by the Shin Bet and police. Azzam is from Narazeth and lives in Be’er Sheva. After the October 7 massacre, Azzam decided to join ISIS and pledged allegiance to Abu Hafs al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, the leader of the Islamic State. During the surprise attack by Hamas, he sent his friends footage of the atrocities and joyfully commented on them. [This is even more unsettling since a significant percentage of doctors, nurses and other staff at Israel’s hospitals are Arabs. Israel’s medical infrastructure is dependent on Arab personnel. The consequences of an Israeli Arab intifada would be disastrous, especially it was coordinated with an uprising in Judea and Samaria, continued fighting in Gaza and an attack by Hezbollah.]

According to The Washington Post, Iran appears to have been deterred by the U.S. show of force and has decided to postpone any retaliation against Israel. Iran is, however, encouraging Hezbollah to launch a major attack against Israel, which Hezbollah seems reluctant to do for fear of the consequences. Meanwhile, Hamas isn’t cooperating with the Americans nor with the mediators in the hostage negotiations and “waiting” for an Iranian attack.

According to an Egyptian official, any hostage agreement accepted by Hamas would have to include guarantees for Sinwar’s safety. Other issues making an agreement unlikely also still exist. For more, click here.

Some of the bodies of the hostages retrieved from Khan Younis earlier this week had bullets in them, indicating that they were likely shot by their Hamas captors.

News Update

Hezbollah fired around 50 rockets at the center of the city of Katzrin in the Golan. One house was hit, one person moderately injured, and several fires were ignited. Hezbollah claimed that it was targeting the Tzanover Base in response to an Israeli strike on a weapons storage facility in the Beqaa valley last night. The IDF spokesman said, “Hezbollah is again firing indiscriminately at Israeli civilians – we will act accordingly.”

An IDF drone strike in Sidon, Lebanon eliminated Khalil Hussein Khalil Al-Maqdah, a senior member of Fatah accused of smuggling Iranian weapons into Judea and Samaria on behalf of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The ceasefire negotiations are reportedly on the verge of collapse, because Hamas is rejecting the U.S. proposal agreed to by Israel.

News Update

Hezbollah fired around 75 rockets at the Upper Galilee and Golan Heights today. No injuries were reported, but several small fires were reported. The IDF responded by striking one of the launching areas. Overnight, the IDF struck Hezbollah weapons depots in Lebanon and killed a key Hezbollah terrorist in a drone strike.

The IDF announced the recovery of the bodies of six Israeli hostages during a night operation in a tunnel in Khan Younis, as part of a new offensive in the area: Abraham Munder, Alex Dancyg, Chaim Peri, Yagev Buchshtab, Yoram Metzger and Nadav Popplewell. The hostages were believed to have been killed in Khan Younis earlier this year, also the causes of their deaths are still being investigated.

Abraham Munder, 79, had lived in Kibbutz Nir Oz for over 50 years. A Six-Day War veteran and the legendary warehouse manager at the Nirlat factory, Abraham was a beloved kibbutz member known for his hard work, loyalty, and musical talent as a singer in the Eshkol choir. He was kidnapped with his wife Ruth, their daughter Karen, and grandson Ohad. The three family members were released after 50 days in captivity. Abraham and Ruth’s son Roy was murdered on October 7th.

Yoram Metzger, 80, from Kibbutz Nir Oz, was kidnapped from his home with his wife, Tamar, who was released after 53 days. Yoram was known for his love of family, storytelling, and humor. He was a founder of the Nir Oz Winery and is survived by Tamar, three children, and seven grandchildren.

Chaim Peri, 80, from Kibbutz Nir Oz, was a man of peace, art, and cinema. He taught at local schools and Sapir College and established the kibbutz’s art gallery and sculpture garden. Chaim was abducted while protecting his wife, Osnat, and is survived by her, five children, and 13 grandchildren.

Alex Dancyg, 76, from Kibbutz Nir Oz, was a historian, educator, and farmer. Born to Holocaust survivors, he helped establish educational delegations to Poland and worked at Yad Vashem for about 30 years. Alex spent his time in captivity giving history lectures to fellow captives.

Nadav Popplewell, 51, from Kibbutz Nirim, was known for his generosity and love of books and science fiction. He was kidnapped with his mother, Channa Peri, who was released after 49 days. His older brother, Roy, was murdered on October 7th. The Popplewell family requests privacy during this time.

Yagev Buchshtab, 35, from Kibbutz Nirim, was a sound technician with a deep passion for music. Yagev played various instruments and cared for several rescued pets. He was abducted with his wife, Rimon Buchshtab-Kirsht, who was released after 50 days.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said today, “Israel will not, under any circumstances, leave the Philadelphi and Nezarim corridors despite the enormous pressures to do so. These are strategic assets, both military and political.” He also reportedly said that he was doubtful that there would be a ceasefire agreement. Hamas has rejected a U.S. backed proposal agreed to be Israel.

National Intelligence Directorate recently warned the defense establishment about a potential escalation in the West Bank. There are currently at least 15 armed “battalions” of Palestinian terrorists throughout the West Bank. Potential scenarios include a new wave of suicide bombings, increased shooting attacks, or even an October 7th type attack against settlements and isolated farms in the territories. The Tel Aviv Police Chief said that the terrorist who, apparently accidentally, prematurely blew himself up in southern Tel Aviv on Sunday was most likely heading for a nearby synagogue. Had he made it there, the results would have been tragic. He said, “it was truly a miracle.”

Lieutenant Shahar Ben Nun, 21, from Petah Tikva, a commander in the Paratroopers Brigade’s Paratroopers Reconnaissance Unit, was killed by friendly fire during a raid in Khan Younis. Six other soldiers were wounded in the incident.

News Update

A Hezbollah drone attack in the Western Galilee this morning claimed the life of Chief Warrant Officer Mahmood Amaria, a 45-year-old tracker in the 300th “Baram” Regional Brigade. The explosive laden drone that hit an IDF base today killed Amaria and wounded several other soldiers. IDF jets struck Hezbollah terrorists in southern Lebanon today.

Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad claimed joint responsibility for a suicide bomb attack in Tel Aviv yesterday that ended up going wrong and just blowing up the terrorist. One passerby on a scooter sustained shrapnel wounds from the blast. The terrorist was identified as a Palestinian man from Nablus.

An Israeli security guard, Gidon Peri, died after a terrorist hit him in the head with a hammer and stole his handgun in the Bar-On industrial park near the settlement of Kedumim yesterday. The terrorist fled and is being hunted by the IDF.

Over the weekend, 2 IDF soldiers driving a truck in a convoy delivering equipment to troops in the southern Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City were hit by a roadside bomb and killed. They are:

  • Sgt. Maj. (res.) Mordechai Yosef Ben Shoam, 34, a truck driver with the Jerusalem Brigade’s 8119th Battalion, from Geva Binyamin.
  • Major (res.) Yotam Itzhak Peled, 34, a logistics officer in the Jerusalem Brigade’s 8119th Battalion, from Rosh Haayin.

Heavy fighting was reported in the Rafah area today.

U.S. Secretary of State Blinken met with Prime Minister Netanyahu for over 2 hours today in Jerusalem. Negotiations continue in Doha. Egyptian authorities have reportedly agreed to Israel’s demand not to set a timetable for the IDF’s withdrawal from the Philadelphi Corridor. U.S. officials are in Cairo trying to pressure the Egyptians into stationing Egyptian forces in Gaza as part of the potential cease-fire agreement. Egypt is rejecting the proposal.

News Update

As cease-fire and hostage negotiations continue in Doha with no progress to speak of, Hezbollah has released a video of a vast underground missile storage and launching facility that it claims is totally secret. The video shows trucks carrying missiles driving through a network of underground tunnels. Sources close to Hezbollah say that Hezbollah will not launch an anticipated retaliatory strike against Israel while the Doha negotiations are ongoing, so as not to be blamed for a possible failure. The Qatari Prime Minister spoke with Iranian leaders last night and reportedly told them to consider whether it’s advisable forIran or Hezbollah to attack Israel while negotiations are in process.

The IDF carried out air and artillery strikes against Hezbollah targets in south Lebanon yesterday. Airstrikes and ground combat continues to eliminate terrorists, weapons and terror infrastructure in southern Gaza.

Over 100 settlers reportedly rampaged through the Palestinian village of Jit in northern Samaria, setting homes and cars on fire. At least 11 villagers were injured, according to Palestinian health authorities. One man was killed by gunfire, and another suffered gunshot wounds. IDF troops and Border Police were dispatched to the scene and used riot dispersal methods to stop and remove the settlers. One settler was detained. Prime Minister Netanyahu, Defense Minister Gallant, Finance Minister Smotrich and National Security Minister Ben Gvir condemned the settler violence. The White House also issued a statement condemning the attack and urging Israeli authorities to protect all communities and hold perpetrators accountable.
