News Update

Sgt. Eyal Shynes, 19, from Kibbutz Afik, of the Nahal Brigade’s 931st Battalion was killed in a Hamas sniper attack in the Rafah area.

As combat operations continue in Gaza, humanitarian aid continues to flow in through the Kerem Shalom crossing. To read more about how the IDF is facilitating the flow of humanitarian aid, click here. 

At least 40 rockets were fired at the Safed area by Hezbollah yesterday. Half of the rockets were intercepted by Iron Dome and many of the rest fell in open areas. Some minor damage was caused. The IDF struck Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.

The Cabinet yesterday approved a package of measures that includes the cancellation of permits and various benefits for senior Palestinian Authority officials, restricting the movement of PA senior officials and preventing them from leaving the country, enforcing their incitement offenses, withdrawing enforcement powers from the PA in the Judean Desert, enforcement actions against rampant construction in the area and more.

The pre-trial chamber set to deliberate on issuing arrest warrants against Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Gallant will hold a discussion on the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) jurisdiction to prosecute Israeli citizens, based on a request by the UK. This postpones the decision to issue the arrest warrants has been postponed by several weeks.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken invited Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz to participate in the NATO summit that will be held in Washington on July 9 to mark the 75-year anniversary of the NATO alliance.

News Update

One IDF soldier was killed and 16 wounded during a raid in Jenin this morning, when their armored personnel carrier was hit by a bomb planted beneath the road and then a second bomb detonated when other forces attempted to evacuate the wounded. Most of the soldiers were only lightly injured from the initial blast, while they were still inside the vehicle. The soldier killed was Cpt. Alon Sacgiu, 22, a sniper squad commander in the Kfir Brigade’s Haruv reconnaissance unit. He was part of the team that attempted to evacuate the wounded soldiers. Most of the wounded soldiers were lightly injured. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack. For more, click here. 

The IDF began an operation in Gaza City’s Shijaiyah neighborhood today. Yesterday, air force jets attacked Hamas terrorists operating from a school in Khan Yunis. The IDF continues to strike Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.

An Israeli airstrike reportedly hit a facility housing pro-Iranian militias, including Hezbollah officials, that was used as a weapons depot south of Damascus yesterday. Two people were killed in the strike.  The Syrian Defense Ministry said in a statement, “Israel conducted an airstrike on several points in the southern region. Air defenses intercepted Israeli missiles and shot down some of them. The attack resulted in the deaths of two individuals, injuries to a soldier, and material damage.”

According to the latest IDF figures, 16% of the buildings in Gaza have been destroyed since the start of the war. The U.N. claims the number to be 50%. Other foreign media reports it to be 70%. For more, click here. 

According to a Washington Post report, the U.S. has provided $6.5 billion in military aid to Israel since the start of the war, with half of the amount being delivered in May.

A new group called the Movement for Settlement in South Lebanon is advocating for Israeli settlement up to the Litani River and calling on Lebanese civilians in the south to evacuate. The group has over 800 members. For more, click here.

The Israel Police has deployed Chinese made speed cameras throughout Israel’s roads. The cameras have been blacklisted by many Western countries, including the U.S. For more, click here.

News Update

IDF forces arrested multiple terror suspects in raids in several Palestinians towns and villages in the Jerusalem and Hebron areas. IDF jets struck Hezbollah targets in several areas of southern Lebanon. Combat operations continue in Gaza.

Zahr Abdel Salam Haniyeh, the older sister of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, was killed Tuesday morning along with around 9 other Haniyeh family members in an airstrike on their home in the Al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City. Haniyeh commented, “If the criminal enemy thinks targeting my family will change our position or that of the resistance, they are delusional, because every martyr in Gaza and Palestine is from my family.” He added, regarding the ceasefire negotiations, “We still claim that any agreement that does not guarantee a cease-fire and an end to the aggression is not an agreement. Our position will not change at any point.”

A large fire broke out last night near the Ofrit military base on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem. The fire is alleged to have started by firebombs thrown near the base. At least 25 fire crews worked to extinguish the fire.

Due to a shortage of combat soldiers, the army has decided to significantly reduce the quotas for high-profile, high-scoring individuals who were previously directed to elite technological and intelligence units such as Unit 8200, 81 in the Intelligence Directorate, and the C4I Corps. Instead, these recruits will be redirected to serve as combat soldiers.

Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, former Mossad head Tamir Pardo and several other prominent Israeli personalities, have written an article in the New York Times asking Congress to rescind its invitation to Prime Minister Netanyahu to address Congress at the end of July, claiming that Netanyahu does not speak for them. News Update

An anti-tank missile fired by Hezbollah hit and wounded 2 member’s of Metula’s security squad yesterday as they were helping a family remove belongings from their house, which was hit by Hezbollah rocket fire on Saturday. Hezbollah launched swarms of drones at Metula and other targets in northern Israel. The IDF struck multiple Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.

The IDF has reportedly carried out artillery strikes at targets in Syria, near the Golan, today.

Prime Minister Netanyahu gave his first interview to an Israeli media outlet, Channel 14, since October 7. Netanyahu said that he would not agree to a complete cease-fire with Hamas, which is one of their requirements to agree to a hostage deal. He said, “No. I’m not prepared to end the war and leave Hamas in place. I am prepared to do a partial deal, that’s no secret, that would return some of the hostages to us.” The Prime Minister’s statement about being prepared to do a partial deal triggered anger from the families of the hostages. Netanyahu said that the phase of intense fighting in Rafah would end within a month, which would allow Israel to transfer forces to the north, but that the war against Hamas would continue. The Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement after the interview that said: “It is Hamas which opposes a deal, not Israel. Prime Minister Netanyahu has made it clear that we will not leave Gaza until we return all 120 of our hostages, living and deceased.” For more, click here.

News Update

Two IDF soldiers from the Alexandroni Brigade’s 9203rd Battalion were killed yesterday in a mortar attack near Gaza City. the soldiers were, Sgt. First Class (res.) Omer Smadga, 25, from Genot Hadar and  Sgt. First Class (res.) Saadia Yaakov Dery, 27, from Tel Aviv. Three other soldiers were seriously wounded in the attack. Combat continues in Rafah as IDF forces move to complete the capture of the entire city. Forces are firing from the air, sea and ground.

Israel has confirmed that 18 hostages have been murdered or killed in captivity, some most likely as a result of IDF fire. 60 hostages have been confirmed to have been murdered on Oct. 7. The IDF has retrieved 19 bodies. For more, click here.

Israel News for 6-20-2024

News Update

An Israeli delegation arrived in Qatar this week to discuss a cease-fire proposal. Given that Hamas is adamant about its demands that there be a complete end to the war and total Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, unlike the proposal backed by the Biden administration, U.S. officials are pessimistic about the chances of a deal being reached and that fighting will most likely continue through the end of the year. Mediators and U.S. officials believe, based on intelligence reports, that the number of living hostages is not more than 50. Hamas claims that it doesn’t know how many hostages are still alive. Most of the hostages presumed dead were murdered on October 7.

The IDF continues to operate against terrorists in Rafah and other areas of Gaza. The IDF claims that it has eliminated half of the terrorists in Rafah, although Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad have returned to operate in other parts that the IDF has withdrawn from.

The Air Force eliminated a top Hezbollah commander in southern Lebanon today. Air strikes also destroyed surface to air missile launchers. Hezbollah leader Nasrallah threatened Israel with invasion if the current hostilities escalate. He also threatened Cyprus, if the country allows Israel to use its airport and military bases. IDF Chief of Staff Halevi informed the government that the IDF is prepared for war against Hezbollah.

IDF Spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in an interview yesterday, “Hamas cannot be destroyed. Hamas is an idea. Those who think it can be made to disappear are wrong. It’s the Muslim Brotherhood.” He said that the only way to make sure Hamas does not return to power is to replace it with a better alternative.

News Update

Hezbollah fired a swarm of drones at Metula today, 3 of which exploded in the town, causing minor damage. Hezbollah also fired rockets into western Galilee. The IDF responded with artillery fire at Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Last night Israel struck a Hezbollah weapons depot and other targets in Lebanon, killing several terrorists.  The most reason violence comes after U.S. special envoy completed talks with Lebanese officials yesterday, in an attempt to stem an all out war that could lead to a broader regional conflict. The IDF confirmed that it has approved operational plans to attack Lebanon if directed to do so.

Yesterday, Hezbollah launched 3 reconnaissance drones at Haifa. One was intercepted, another disappeared from radar and is believed to have crashed into the sea and the third completed its reconnaissance mission, taking video of the port, the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems campus with Iron Dome missile defense batteries, rocket engine depots, David’s Sling aerial defense facilities and radar installations. The IDF chose not to shoot down the drone since it was unarmed.

The Biden administration has yet to advance the sale of 50 F-15 fighter jets to Israel, even after congressional leaders agreed to allow the deal to proceed last month. Prime minister Netanyahu posted a video on social media yesterday, criticizing the Biden administration for delaying weapons deliveries. He said, “It’s inconceivable that in the past few months, the administration has been withholding weapons and ammunitions from Israel.” The White House denied knowledge of any delays, other than one incident of delaying one arms shipment of 2,000-pound bombs, out of concern that they would be used in civilian areas in Rafah. Some Israeli officials also criticized Netanyahu for making false accusations of weapons delays.

The U.S. is abandoning the pier it built off the coast of Gaza to facilitate more humanitarian aid flow into the strip. The pier will be dismantled in early July ahead of anticipated bad weather conditions in September, and will be towed to Israel. U.S. Central Command said, “The decision is not made lightly but is necessary to ensure the temporary pier can continue to deliver aid in the future.” Since May 17, over 3,500 metric tons (7.7 million pounds) have been delivered through the pier. The pier cost $230 million. [Can you think of a better use for $230 million??]

According to Arab media, Egypt has shown willingness to potentially join a military task force to operate under UN auspices in Gaza, after Israel withdraws from the strip.

News Update

U.S. special envoy Amos Hochstein is in Beirut today, meeting with Lebanese leaders to try and arrive at a way to avoid a major war between Israel and Hezbollah and deescalate the current fighting. Hochstein met with Israeli leaders yesterday in Jerusalem.

A senior Israeli negotiator said yesterday that Israel was certain that dozens of hostages were still alive and that most were being held by Hamas. He said that Israel could not end the conflict with Hamas before a deal is signed for the release of all of the hostages. A phased release would give Hamas the opportunity to violate the agreement and destroy the negotiations for releases hostages in a second phase, as they have done repeatedly in the past. The initial agreement must include all of the hostages. Hamas is currently rejecting the proposal advocated for by President Biden and are a demanding a complete end to the war immediately.

Hamas is reportedly keeping 2 of its battalions out of the fighting to enable them to support a Hamas governemnt in Gaza after the war is over.

Israel is upgrading its plutonium for its reactor at the nuclear research facility in Dimona, according to the annual report of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) on nuclear weapons. The SIPRI report ranks Israel eighth in its total number of stored nuclear warheads with 90, ahead of North Korea which it estimates has 50. India and Pakistan are 6th and 7th with around 170 each. In a speech on conflict-related sexual violence, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris condemned Hamas’ sexual violence during its October 7 attack on Israel and called for a hostage release deal and a permanent ceasefire. Before her speech, Harris met Amit Soussana, 40, who was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 and released after 55 days in captivity, and who was sexually assaulted by her captor.

News Update

Prime Minister Netanyahu has dissolved the War Cabinet, a week after Benny Gantz and Gadi Eizenkot left the government. National Security Minister Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Smotrich had demanded to join the war cabinet, which may have led to Netanyahu disbanding it. For more, click here.

Israeli officials reiterated that would not commit to ending the war in Gaza before the release of all of the hostages. They stressed that Hamas had violated previous agreements, so ending the war prematurely, would be a mistake.

Several IDF battalions, along with the air force, continue to operate in Rafah. The IDF said that over 500 terrorists have been killed and over 100 tunnel shafts discovered. For more, click here.

On Saturday morning, 8 IDF soldiers were killed when their vehicle was destroyed by an explosive device while they were returning from a mission in Rafah, during which around 50 Hamas terrorists were killed. Four other soldiers were killed in other incidents.

White House special envoy to the Middle East Amos Hochstein will arrive in Israel today in a bid to try and avoid an all out war in the north. He will meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu, Defense Minister Gallant, former War Cabinet member Benny Gantz, President Isaac Herzog and opposition leader Yair Lapid. Israeli and American officials acknowledge that the fighting in the north will likely continue until there is a ceasefire in Gaza. Hochstein will head to Lebanon for talks with Lebanese officials tomorrow. Meanwhile, a Hezbollah commanded was killed in a drone strike in southern Lebanon today.

The men who held the 3 Israeli hostages who were rescued last week were Ahmad Aljamal, a 73-year-old family doctor who is considered a pillar of his community, and his son, Abdallah, a 37-year-old Al Jazeera journalist. Abdallah’s wife and children also lived in the apartment. Neighbors in the apartment complex claim that while they knew the family was closely connected to Hamas, they did not know that they were holding hostages.

Israeli defense exports for 2023 hit a record $13.073 billion. Almost 50% of the exports went to Asia and the Pacific Region and 35% to Europe. For more, click here.

News Update

Dozens of rockets were fired at the Galilee and Golan. Israeli jets struck a convoy of trucks transporting weapons in northern Lebanon, over 60 miles from the border. A Syrian surface-to-air missile was launched at the aircraft missed and exploded on the ground, causing significant damage. Other Hezbollah targets were also struck. The attacks came shortly after an IDF drone was shot down over southern Lebanon.

Four IDF soldiers from the Givati brigade were killed and 7 wounded in a booby trapped building in Rafah yesterday.

The killed were:

Maj. Tal Pshebilski Shaulov, 24, from Gedera.

Staff Sgt. Eitan Karlsbrun, 20, from Modiin.

Sgt. Almog Shalom, 19, from Hamadia.

Sgt. Yair Levin, 19, from Givat Harel.

In a raid in the Jordan Valley, IDF forces uncovered a bomb production lab containing at least 80 explosive devices and addition material for explosives. Several terrorists were killed and wounded when they fired on troops.

The United Nations Security Council adopted a U.S.-drafted resolution backing a proposal outlined by President Biden for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Russia abstained. In addition to the joint call that effectively equates Israel and Hamas, Israel has informed Washington that the current wording of the proposal does not reflect Israel’s deal framework. The approved text of the resolution states that Israel agreed to end the war and completely withdraw its forces from Gaza in exchange for the return of all hostages. However, Israeli officials emphasize that their agreement to end the war was conditional on Hamas no longer being the ruling power in Gaza, and they claim that they did not consent to the wording presented to the Security Council. Hamas welcomed the resolution.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, in messages conveyed by Hamas leader Sinwar to Hamas members outside of Gaza,  he says that civilian deaths are “necessary sacrifices” and that civilian deaths would put international pressure on Israel. He also said that he is prepared to die fighting.

The Festival of Shavuot begins tonight and extends for one day in Israel and two days outside of Israel. The holiday literally means weeks, and is the culmination of the counting of 7 weeks (49 days) from the second day of Passover. Shavuot is described in the Torah as the harvest festival during which farmers bring their first produce to the Temple in Jerusalem. Shavuot is also the anniversary of the giving of the Ten Commandments and Torah at Mount Sinai. The Book of Ruth is read in the synagogue, and dairy meals are traditionally eaten. It is also customary to stay up all night (first night) to study Torah. We will not be publishing IsraelAM tomorrow or Thursday.
