White House special envoy Amos Hochstein has presented a proposal to Hezbollah that includes demilitarizing southern Lebanon, moving Hezbollah forces back at least 10km from the Israeli border and removing Hezbollah’s rockets, launchers, mortars, drones and missiles from the area. In exchange, Israel would agree to some amendments of the border with Lebanon. Israeli officials believe that Hezbollah leader Nasrallah will not accept the proposal.
Mossad Chief David Barnea headed to Qatar to continue negotiations for a hostage release deal. Prime Minister Netanyahu discussed the negotiations with U.S. President Biden in a phone call yesterday. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, threatened to bring down the coalition government if a cease-fire deal in exchange for the release of the hostages is agreed to. Ben-Gvir along with Finance Minister Bezalel Smortich opposed the cease-fire deal in November, which resulted in the release of some of the women and children abducted by the terrorists. They have said that the release of the hostages cannot be the top priority of the government and that only a complete defeat of Hamas should end the war.
