News Update

Hezbollah fired scores of rockets at northern Israel yesterday. One of them killed Mohammed Naim, 23, and wounded 3 others in Ma’alot-Tarshiha in the Western Galilee. Shrapnel fell on a train station in Nahariya.

Hezbollah has officially announced that Naim Qassem, previously the deputy of Hassan Nasrallah, has been appointed as the organization’s new Secretary General.

Senior Israeli officials said the negotiations on a cease-fire deal in Lebanon are “in advanced stages.” If the talks are successful, the IDF will begin withdrawing most of its troops and redeploying some to areas of southern Lebanon that are considered tactically significant. The agreement would include the withdrawal of Hezbollah forces north of the Litani river, the deployment of Lebanese army troops and UNIFIL forces to southern Lebanon and mechanisms to monitor the area, and the preventing of Hezbollah from rearming. The IDF completed a raid on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza’s Jabaliya, which served as a Hamas terror command center. At least 60 terrorists were captured. Military operations will continue in Jabaliya, as the IDF estimates that there are still several hundred Hamas terrorists in the city. Hamas is reportedly making explosive devices from unexploded IDF ordnance scattered across the area.

The IDF announced the names of 4 soldiers killed fighting in Jabalya. All are members of the Multidimensional Unit, a special force of the 401st Armored Division:

– Captain Yehonatan (Johnny) Keren, 22, from Moledet.
– Staff Sergeant Nisim Meytal, 20, from Hadera.
– Staff Sergeant Aviv Gilboa, 21, from Neveh Tzuf.
– Staff Sergeant Naor Haimov, 22, from Rosh Ha’ayin.

766 IDF soldiers have been killed since the start of the war.

The Knesset passed a law, 90 to 10, to cut official ties with UNRWA and halt all of the organizations activities in Israeli territory. Under the new law, UNRWA will not “operate any institution, provide any service, or conduct any activity, whether directly or indirectly,” in the sovereign territory of Israel. In effect, UNRWA’s activities in East Jerusalem will be terminated and the body’s powers will be transferred to Israel’s responsibility and control.

A negotiation summit in Doha concluded yesterday with some progress reported. The talks reportedly covered Egyptian, American and Qatari proposals.
