Israel’s government yesterday approved the Trump peace plan, and a ceasefire went into effect at noon local time today. The IDF withdrew to a yellow line on the map agreed upon in the plan, beginning a 72-hour window for the release of the hostages. President Trump said that he would visit Israel in the coming days for the hostage release.
Final details of the plan are still being negotiated between Israel and Hamas in Egypt, including the precise demarcation of the withdrawal lines, the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and control of the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza. Celebrations are breaking out in Israel and in Gaza, but people are still holding their their breath to see if the cease-fire will hold.
U.S. troops began to arrive in Israel on Thursday, the first of about 200 being sent to support the cease-fire in Gaza as part of an international team. The troops will help monitor the implementation of the cease-fire and eventual transition to a civilian government, according to a U.S. official. They will also help facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Hamas has said that it does not know the locations of nine of the dead hostages, and has agreed to the formation of an international force of Israel, the United States, Qatar, Egypt and Turkey which, with the assistance of the Red Cross, will try to search for at all the remains. According to the ceasefire agreement, 600 trucks carrying humanitarian aid will enter Gaza daily. The Rafah crossing will also be reopened. Thousands of Palestinians have began returning to Gaza City.
