British Blunder
Priti Patel, the UK Secretary of State  for International Development, resigned after it was revealed that she met with members of the Israeli government, including the PM, without informing or getting the permission of the British government.

Patel, who was a rising star in Britain’s Conservative party and a staunch supporter of Israel, was on a private vacation in Israel with her family when she “secretly” met with Netanyahu and other government and business leaders.

After the visit, Ms Patel suggested some of Britain’s aid budget go to the Israeli army. She also asked her officials to see if Britain could support humanitarian operations conducted by the Israeli army in the occupied Golan Heights area. The request was seen as inappropriate, since the UK doesn’t recognize Israeli sovereignty in the Golan.

Patel was also found to have met “secretly” with other Israeli officials in NYC in September.

Prior to resigning, Ms Patel apologized for not informing the Foreign Office of the meetings and for suggesting Boris Johnson, the foreign secretary, knew about her plans in advance of the visit.

Israel has lost a friend in the UK.

Over 80% of the voters in Monroe voted to allow the 20,000 strong Hassidic community to form it’s own town, which will be the first totally Hassidic town in the US (and in the world, outside of Israel). The new Town of Palm Tree will also annex several hundred acres of land from Monroe.

Fighting Terror
A Palestinian official claimed yesterday that Palestinian Authority security forces stopped seven terror attacks against Israelis in the West Bank in October. According the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Palestinian security apparatus prevented planned stabbings, shootings and bombings. The Palestinians have been cracking down hard on Hamas members in the West Bank, arresting 46 last month along with dozens of members of other terror groups.

Egypt Talks Peace
In an interview with Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said that he believes a solution can reached to the Israel-Palestinian conflict and that the Israeli public can be persuaded into signing a peace agreement.

He said, “We, the Arabs, can convince public opinion in Israel of the advantages of peace. The benefits gained following the agreement between Egypt and Israel are evidence of that. Finding a solution to the Palestinian issue will bring about a new situation in the region. Our brothers in the Gulf states understand this issue.”

The Egyptian president also praised the reconciliation agreement between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas.

Lucky Tourists
A young couple from Romania hit the jackpot by being the 3 millionth tourists to Israel in 2017. They were greeted at Ben Gurion airport with a red carpet and by Tourism minister Yariv Levin, who whisked them away to a luxury suite at a Dead Sea hotel by limousine. They also got a helicopter tour of the country, a guided sunset tour along Tel Aviv’s boardwalk, and a gourmet private dinner prepared by Israeli chef Nir Zook at his home.

But the most surprising part of their adventure came when they were met by PM Netanyahu in Jerusalem, who proceeded to give them a guided tour of David’s Citadel in the Old City. And it was quite a tour.

Druze in Golan

Israel News for 11-6-17

Druze Appeal
Following a terror attack by the Nusra Front that claimed 18 lives in the Syrian Druze village of Hadar, the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Israel, Shaykh Muwaffak Tarīf, asked the IDF to warn the Nusra Front to stay away from the village. He said, “We didn’t ask and are not asking Israel to go into Syria or take over the village. The Nusra Front is under the watchful eye of the IDF, which could tell them: ‘Be careful, don’t go near this village, to us this is a red line.’ We’re counting on the IDF to do this.”

Tariff also told the PM, Defense Minister and IDF commanders, “Israel must stand beside the Druze and protect this village, and not let the Nusra Front conquer it and slaughter its people.”

The IDF gave assurances that it would prevent the Nusra Front, and any other terror group, from advancing on the village.

Gaza Infighting
Despite the reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah which gave the Palestinian Authority control over Gaza, the PA’s General Intelligence and Preventive Security service arrested 50 Hamas operatives in the West Bank in October. They also arrested 130 other operatives belonging to other groups including the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

Kotel Ferraris
A few weeks ago directors of Ferrari, the international sports vehicle company, asked the Chief Rabbi of the Western Wall (Kotel) for permission to park several cars in part of the Western Wall plaza during the early morning hours of Friday in order to make a tour of Jerusalem—to be held several hours before Shabbat—easier. He rejected the request. Then they presented their request to a junior official of the Heritage Foundation, which administers the holy site, and he approved it.

Last Friday Kotel worshipers were shocked to see about twenty Ferraris parked at the holy site. The Chief Rabbi was away at the time, but when he heard the news he was furious. He said, “We won’t even allow a can of Coke to be sold here. We’re rejecting requests left and right to place beverage vending machines on the site, despite the heat and people’s thirst, and end up with a spectacle of 20 sparkling Ferraris? Out of the question.”

The rabbi and the CEO of the Heritage Foundation accepted full responsibility for the “grave, unfortunate error” and promised stricter measures are forthcoming.

Coming Home
It has been revealed that Israeli diplomats, instructed by Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely, have been involved in secret discussions with the government of Ukraine to obtain permission to transport the remains of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov from his tomb in Uman to Israel.

Tens of thousands of Israelis visit the tomb each year, particularly on Rosh Hashanah, since Rabbi Nachman promised that anyone who visits and prays at his grave on the holiday will be blessed and lifted up from the depths. But the phenomenon of having over 30,000 Jewish men leave the Holy Land to go to Ukraine for the High Holiday doesn’t sit well with many rabbinic authorities. Even leaders of the Breslov sect are pushing to move the rabbi’s remains and bring his blessings home to Israel.

But given the huge amount of revenue that Ukraine gets from the massive tourist trade driven by the rabbi’s tomb, the chances of them letting the remains live the country are extremely slim.

Perhaps cutting off that revenue stream for a couple of years by urging Israelis to stay away will persuade the Ukrainians to change their minds? Some well placed bribes will probably help too.

Jewish and Arab volunteers work side by side in the United Hatzalah rescue service. President and Founder of United Hatzalah Eli Beer saw the video and said the following: “One of the things not mentioned nearly enough in the media is the cooperation and friendships that are formed by people of different faiths working together to achieve a common goal. At United Hatzalah, we have volunteers and staff members of all faiths represented in Israel, working together to save lives. Volunteering side by side, day in and day out achieves a bond of friendship between people of different faiths that is rarely seen in today’s polarizing world.”

IDF Says No
The IDF has refused to allow Hamas to retrieve the bodies of its terrorists that were killed in the tunnel destroyed earlier this week unless Hamas releases more information regarding the bodies of slain IDF soldiers killed in 2014’s Operation Protective Edge. Hamas had appealed through the Red Cross on Wednesday. Although the bodies are technically in Gaza, the IDF prohibits Gazans from getting within 300 meters of the border.

Several left-wing organizations yesterday appealed to the Attorney General and the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories demanding that the IDF allow the Palestinian search and rescue teams to enter the border area to locate and retrieve the bodies.

A spokesperson from one of the organizations, Muna Haddad, said, “To prevent them from locating and rescuing those missing in the area currently under the control of the Israeli army is a blatantly illegal policy and contravenes both Israeli and international law and violates the Geneva Convention.”

Birthright Makes Change
Two years ago Birthright, the organization that organizes free trips to Israel for Jews in the early twenties, integrated meetings with Israeli Arabs into their trip itineraries. This week they suspended those meetings. In a statement to Haaretz, Birthright explained that the “results of the initial evaluation have shown that there is a need for further analysis of this module in the context of the educational trip as a whole.”

Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Union of Reform Judaism, criticized the decision saying, “The fact  that Birthright Israel has decided to halt their outreach to Arab citizens of Israel shows just how out of touch Birthright is  becoming. Birthright has been a transformative experience for over half a million young Jews, 40 percent who self-identify as Reform, but many are now questioning whether the ten-day trips are exposing participants to a too-narrow slice of contemporary Israel.”

Jacobs added that cutting out the meetings, “will communicate loudly and clearly that these are trips with a narrow political agenda that is out of step with today’s young Jews and most of their parents as well.”

Chief Rabbi
According to a report in the haredi Mishpacha magazine, top officials in the Shas party are considering asking Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef to resign as Chief Rabbi of Israel and join Shas in order to revitalize the party. As Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Yosef is forbidden from engaging with a political party.

Shas officials believe that Rabbi Yosef can blunt Shas’ continuous slide in the polls if he would join the party due to his stature as the son of Shas founder and former Chief Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef. A senior Shas official said, “Thousands of attendees fill every event which the Chief Rabbi appears at. It’s almost like 25 years ago when Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef was still alive – he brings electricity with him”.

Israel Attacks
According to Lebanese media reports, the Israeli Air Force attacked a rocket factory and depot last night near the city of Homs in Syria. The report also said that the Syrian army fired at least one surface to air missile at the Israeli aircraft, which missed. The Israeli fighters returned home unharmed. Russian media reported that the rockets belonged to Hezbollah. There were no reports of casualties.

Intelligence Minister Israel Katz told Army Radio today, ”I can’t, of course, relate to reports about the IDF’s attack in Syria, but regardless, Israel’s position is clear: Smuggling arms to Hezbollah is a red line in our eyes. Israel has acted in the past and it will act in the future to prevent arms smuggling to Hezbollah according to intelligence information that we will have.”

Election Polls
Two new election polls just released indicate that while the Likud would lose some seats, it would remain Israel’s largest party. The Zionist Union, Yesh Atid and Bayit Yehudi parties would all gain seats, while Shas would plunge to just 4 seats. But regardless of the power shifts, it seems that PM Netanyahu would keep his job. The only way that could change is if the mainstream parties joined in a coalition with the Joint List Arab party which holds 12 seats, and leaders of Zionist Union have rejected that option out of hand.

Terror Tunnel
The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit confirmed yesterday that the Southern Command carried out a controlled detonation of a tunnel located near the border fence with Gaza. The terror tunnel penetrated deep into Israeli territory. IDF Spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis stated, “we now have possession of the tunnel, and it no longer constitutes a threat.”

At least 7 terrorists from Islamic Jihad and Hamas were killed and 7 wounded in the tunnel destruction, including senior commanders of both organizations. Some of those killed had rushed in to the tunnel to rescue those who were hit by the initial blast, but they were then killed by secondary explosions caused by ammunition and explosives stored in the tunnel.

The IDF claims that its intention was solely to destroy the tunnel and not to kill the terrorists. [Sometimes things just work out on their own.]

Education Minister Naftali Bennett scolded the IDF for its “apology” regarding killing the terrorists. He tweeted, ”We must not apologize for the successful elimination of terrorists. These were terrorists who were digging a tunnel into Israel that was intended to kill Israeli women and children.” He added, “The IDF’s goal is to defeat the enemy, and this is how we should continue.”

Israel was in contact with Egypt following the incident to assure the Egyptian government and military that the destruction of the tunnel was a purely defensive measure which was carried out entirely within Israeli territory.

An IDF official observed, “This is the first time we’ve seen a tunnel dug by Islamic Jihad, so it is something new.”

PA President Abbas’ Fatah party condemned the tunnel destruction, calling it, “the Israeli crime directed against our people in Gaza, which resulted in the deaths of eight civilians and the wounding of 14 others.” Hamas and Islamic Jihad also condemned the attack.

Anyone with half a brain and a hatred of terror praised the destruction of a tunnel whose sole purpose was to allow terrorists to enter Israel and murder innocent people.

Rachel’s Tomb
Yesterday (the 11th day of the Hebrew month of Cheshvan) marked the traditional anniversary (Yarzeiht) of the death of our biblical matriarch Rachel, who is buried in Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem. Tens of thousands of Jews visited the tomb yesterday to pray.

Rachel is the only one of the matriarchs and patriarchs to not be buried in the Cave of Machpelah in Hebron. Tradition teaches that she was buried on the road leading to Jerusalem to comfort her children when they would be sent into exile and cary and pray for their triumphant return to their homeland.

The Prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 31:14) says,
A voice is heard on high,
Wailing, bitterly crying. Rachel weeps for her children. She refuses to be consoled for they are gone.

Then he tells God’s answer:

“Restrain your voice from weeping, hold back your eyes from their tears. For your work has its reward and your children shall return to their border.”

UK for 2 States
British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson wrote an op-ed in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Balfour Declaration in which he praised Israel for its achievements and pledged Britain’s continued support.

He also expressed the need for a Palestinian state. He wrote, ”I see no contradiction in being a friend of Israel—and a believer in that country’s destiny—while also being deeply moved by the suffering of those affected and dislodged by its birth. The vital caveat in the Balfour Declaration—intended to safeguard other communities—has not been fully realised. I have no doubt that the only viable solution to the conflict resembles the one first set down on paper by another Briton, Lord Peel … and that is the division of two states for two people.”

Regarding the borders of that state he said, “The borders should be based on the lines they stood on June 4, 1967—the eve of the Six-Day War—with equal land swaps to reflect the national, security, and religious interests of the Jewish and Palestinian peoples.”

Johnson concluded with, “It is Israelis and Palestinians who must negotiate the details and write their own chapter in history. A century on, Britain will give whatever support we can in order to close the ring and complete the unfinished business of the Balfour Declaration.”

Shabbat Ruling
In her final ruling as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Miriam Naor ruled today that Tel Aviv businesses may continue to operate on Shabbat. The court rejected a petition to prevent the Tel Aviv municipality from granting dispensations to supermarkets allowing them to operate on Shabbat.

Health Minister Yakov Litzman (UTJ) blasted the ruling saying, “The decision of outgoing Supreme Court Chief Justice Miriam Naor is in line with her traditional of anti-religious rulings. This is her ‘parting gift’ and a callous attempt on the part of the Supreme Court judges to harm Israel’s Jewish character, while causing moral injustice.”

He added, “This ruling tramples on the rights of thousands of workers, harms their livelihoods, and prevents them from enjoying their basic right to a day of rest with their families. All of the religious and haredi representatives agree that we must stop the anti-religious floodgates which the Supreme Court opened with this ruling. We will fight to fix the injustice in this ruling.”

Meanwhile, Defense Minster Avigdor Liberman (Yisrael Beytenu) praised the ruling saying, “This was a worthy decision. There is no reason the State of Israel should harm the character of Tel Aviv and force all its residents – and most of Israel’s citizens – to live a lifestyle which is not theirs and which they do not want.”

People Against Immunity
According to a recent poll conducted for Yedioth Ahronoth, 63% of Israelis are against the proposed Likud bill that would grant the PM total immunity from any police investigations. The Attorney General and State Prosecutor have both expressed their opposition to the bill.

In light of recent opposition from coalition partners Kulanu and Bayit Yehudi, discussion of the bill in the Ministerial Committee for Legislation has been postponed for a month. Many Kulanu MKs have indicated that they will vote against the bill.

Since it is an amendment to Basic Law: The Government, the bill requires a majority of 61 MKs to pass. Without the votes of all the members of Kulanu, the legislation is unlikely to pass.

Hezbollah to Blame
Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman claimed yesterday that the five rockets fired into Israel by Syrian artillery on Saturday were not the result of errant fire, but rather a direct order from Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

He said, “The fire was carried out by a local cell operated by Hezbollah. Hezbollah did this in isolation of the Assad regime. There was a personal instruction by Nasrallah to compartmentalize Assad and his regime from the execution of this shooting … with the goal of dragging us into the Syrian mire. Therefore I call here both on the Assad regime … and also on the Russian forces that are present there, to restrain Hezbollah. And this is another example of why they should be kicked out of Syria as fast as possible.”

While the IDF acknowledged that the shelling was not accidental, it did not place the blame on any particular party. A defense official noted that “Lieberman’s comments on Nasrallah and the rocket fire on the Golan did not come from the army, but are instead based on his understanding, judgment and perspective.”

In a move to both clamp down on terror activity and improve living conditions in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Isawiya, last night Israeli police and Border Police forces arrested 51 terror suspects in the neighborhood while municipal employees find and installed lighting in public spaces, cleared garbage dumps and safety hazards, removed and repaired street signs, erased graffiti and checked safety standards in local businesses. Isawiya residents didn’t know whether to praise or curse the Israelis! Most probably did just the former.

No Immunity
Israel’s Attorney General (AG) and State Prosecutor have united in their opposition to a proposed Likud bill that would provide the Prime Minister with total immunity from investigation for illegal behavior.

State Prosecutor Shay Nitzan said, “There are those who maintain that because of the ‘dignity’ of kings and leaders, we should not investigate too much if suspicion is raised against them so that the public’s confidence in them is not compromised, and that is a total mistake.”

He added, “Allowing a sitting president or any other leader to continue his term while ignoring real criminal suspicions that have arisen against him is what harms the state, its respect and stature and it also damages respect for public officials.”

AG Mandelblit agreed with Nitzan. Supporters of the bill dismissed the criticism and vowed to push the bill forward through the Knesset.

Reality Check
Imagine for a moment that supporters of President Trump would try to pass a bill in Congress to prohibit any investigations relating to the President. How do you think that would go over? Well, that’s exactly what Netanyahu supporters are trying to do in Israel. How does that sound to you?

Police Mistake
In a seemingly insensitive and thoughtless move, police branded Haredi protesters that were arrested at an anti-draft demonstration on Thursday by writing numbers on their arms. The imagery of Nazi concentration camp number tattoos was obvious to just about everyone except for the police officers that implemented the crude accounting system.

Police have also been accused of using excessive and brutal force against Haredi demonstrators. The Police internal investigations unit is investigating the allegations and Police Commissioner Roni Alsheikh responded to videos of police violence saying, “I felt bad watching the videos. I’m not condoning what they did. If an officer lost control, they’ll pay for it and some officers may face charges.”

Haredi vs Haredi
Haredi Rabbinic leader and sage Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky from Bnei Brak castigated Haredi anti-draft extremists, part of the Jerusalem Faction, who organized mass demonstrations last week during which 120 were arrested for violence.

In a letter published in the Haredi paper Yatid Ne’eman, Rabbi Kanievsky wrote, “I have been sick to my stomach over recent harm to the sanctity of the Torah, which has been degraded to the very depths of hell by some empty and reckless (youths—ed). Kanievsky wrote. “Woe to us that this is the case today.”

Combat Boots
The IDF has decided to provide all of its soldiers with the new and improved boot currently reserved for combat infantry and special forces units. The boots have been in use since 2006, and were being sold on the “black market”. So now all IDF soldiers, regardless of job, will be able to walk in comfort. A “step” in the right direction for the IDF?
